Kevin started the discussion with reminiscing on how twitter was introduced two years ago at SXSW. He added that the goal in writing is to inform, engage, entertain, and persuade. Dana Robinson let us know that NBC only started to twitter five months ago. Helen Klein Ross commented that Facebook was the place to connect to people you used to know, while twitter connects you with people you want to know. She added that you need to make every tweet count in 140 characters. Ashley Pierce told the group that companies need to stop talking like companies and start talking like people.
The audience shared which twitter and social networking applications they were using, including tweetdeck, tweetlater, twihrl, and twerbos.

LA Times Festival of Books Highlights
Apr 27th
It was a perfect sunny weekend at UCLA for the LA Times Festival of Books. The event attracts over 100,000 attendees and over 100 authors presented their books at the two day festival on the college campus.
It was my first year at the event as a published author, and I was grateful for the opportunity to sign copies of my book, The Perils of Cyber-Dating at the Authors’ Coop, near the LA Times Stage.
On Saturday, I had the opportunity to hear Tori Spelling promote her new best-selling book, Mommywood. In addition, Alyssa Milano presented her book Safe at Home: Confessions of a Baseball Fanatic
, and Kristen Chenoweth talked about her book, A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages
and delighted the audience by singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
The afternoon ended with a presentation by Bob Barker, but unfortunately I was unable to “come on down” to hear him talk about his new book, Priceless Memories as it coincided with my book signing of my tell-all romantic memoir, The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online
.
I stopped by to say hello to The Millionaire Matchmaker, Patti Stanger, another Jersey girl, whose book Become Your Own Matchmaker: 8 Easy Steps for Attracting Your Perfect Mate is still on the best-seller list.
On Sunday, I arrived in time to see Marlee Matlin, who wrote I’ll Scream Later as well as three children’s books. She shared her exciting news that she will be receiving her star on Hollywood Boulevard on May 6th. Author and attorney, David Baldacci,
presented his book, First Family at the LA Times Stage and described a writer as someone who is willing to work for years in total obscurity with the possibility of never being read and having to endure repeated rejections. He shared his story with the audience which included a rejection letter that simply said, “I’m sorry. We only represent talent.”
I met many other authors who shared their stories on what they have learned about the book publishing process and made a few friends along the way.
I am grateful for Christiane Alexians and Carolyn Howard-Johnson who invited me to join them at the Authors’ Coop Booth. I look forward to my next book signing event on Sunday, May 3rd at Book Soup in West Hollywood where I will be raffling off the “Cyber Love Basket” filled with over $1000 of romantic goodies guaranteed to spice up your love life.
Cyber Love Story of the Week – Lesa and J.D.
Apr 24th
Lesa saw J.D. on Yahoo! Personals in November, 2006. While viewing his online dating profile she decided that they would not be compatible. One day she went to watch the Denver Broncos game at a sports bar nearby and recognized J.D. from his Internet dating profile photo. He had no idea who she was and didn’t notice her glancing over at him during the game.
When Lesa returned home, she decided to send J.D. an email introducing herself. She told him she thought she had seen him before and he replied that he would have known if they had met before, and that and didn’t think so.
J.D. then asked Lesa out on a date for the following week, and apparently he got “cold feet” as he canceled the date. He finally rescheduled the date which started out with coffee, turned into a lunch date on the same day, was followed by drinks, and they ended up at dinner.
J.D. then told Lesa that he only wanted to be friends. After the second date he changed his mind and they officially became a couple. The two were married 1 1/2 years later and they plan to be together forever.
Congratulations to Lesa and J.D. our Cyber Love Story of the Week on CyberDatingExpert.com. Here’s proof that if you take it slowly, agree to start out with a coffee date, a relationship can develop into being the great love you always dreamed of.
For consideration in the Cyber Love Story of the Week, please send your submissions to info@CyberDatingExpert.com.
National Association of Broadcasters Conference Review
Apr 22nd
Industry leaders fondly refer to the largest broadcasting conference simply as the NAB. It has now been renamed, NABSHOW ™ Where Content Comes to Life™. For years, I have been attending this conference, which is one of the largest shows held in Las Vegas. However, this was the first year that I didn’t have to wait on a taxi line or worry about a last minute dinner reservation at my favorite restaurant. I am told that attendance was down by twenty percent, however the exhibit halls were a bit bare this year with more exhibitors than guests walking around. It’s a sign of the times.
But not all was doom and gloom at the NAB. I arrived in time for the Opening session where NAB President and CEO David Rehr gave an excellent presentation and introduced Mary Tyler Moore who received the NAB Distinguished Service Award. Tyler Moore, a television icon, was best known for her role in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” She discussed her struggle with Diabetes and the charity work she does for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). It was a well-deserved honor for the television legend.
The Television luncheon that day honored my friend, Diane Sutter, who received the NAB Leadership Award, as well as Bob Newhart who was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Kelsey Grammar received the NAB Television Chairman’s Award at the same luncheon.
After lunch, I stopped by the NAB Bookstore and said hello to Deborah Norville, who was signing copies of her book, Thank You Power: Making the Science of Gratitude Work for You.
That evening I celebrated in style attending the RAIN (Radio and Internet Newsletter) reception held by Kurt Hanson, the Intelsat Party at Wolfgang Puck’s Postrio at the Venetian, and ended the evening at the annual IDB Communications reunion, also held at the Venetian where I reminisced among friends about the early days of radio.
On day two of the conference, I ventured into the exhibit hall to visit the 615 Music Booth for the “Slaughter”unplugged performance, where legendary recording artist, Mark Slaughter performed unplugged versions of several of his hit songs including “Fly to the Angels” and “Up All Night.” Slaughter shared a cyber-dating story with me, and you may read about it soon in the “Peril of the Week” on the CyberDatingExpert.com site.
One of the show highlights was when I met Miss America, the darling Katie Stam. Although many attendees held the status of ”in transition,” and the show had a more serious tone, we learned that television viewership is on the rise, and I am back again writing entries in my gratitude journal.
