ABC News – How to Find Love on Facebook

In a Valentine’s story by ABC News, I was interviewed as to why people are finding love on Facebook with a nice mention of our Cyber Love Story of the Week feature.

“Facebook provides a friendly place for people to engage in conversation, reflect on their past memories and reunite with people they may [have] lost touch with,” said Julie Spira, cyber-dating expert and author of “The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online.” “People feel more comfortable in reaching out on Facebook because they don’t run the risk of rejection that they might get on a phone call.

On her Web site, Spira features a “Cyber Love Story of the Week” and said that all kinds of circumstances have helped couples find love on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites not dedicated to dating.

One couple started dating, and ultimately tied the knot, after realizing on Facebook that they share a name.

Out of curiosity, Kelly Hildebrandt, a 20-something female from Florida, searched Facebook for her name. When she found Kelly Hildebrandt, a 20-something male from Texas, she sent him a note.

The two started corresponding over Facebook, he flew out to visit her and eight months later, he proposed.

Facebook Helps New Acquaintances Build Relationships

Spira said social networks also provide places for new acquaintances to become better friends.

“Quite often you will meet someone at a party or business networking event, exchange cards, and become Facebook friends,” she said. Status updates, pictures and comments on a member’s profile give people clues about a potential partner’s dating status.

Cyber Love Story of the Week – Amanda and Ryan

Amanda’s roommate, eager to date, wanted to join Match.com.  However, she preferred to have Amanda join with her – safety in numbers, she thought.  Amanda originally declined. She had no interest in online dating.  Fast-forward two weeks later,   when Amanda’s roommate confessed that she secretly had put up an online dating profile for her without her knowledge.

After the shock had passed, Amanda went to her account to cancel it.  Out of curiosity she peeked at the five guys that Match had selected for her.  One of them was pretty cute and she couldn’t resist sending him a quick email.  The next week Amanda and met Ryan for coffee.  They began to date and the more time they spent together, the better it got!

After a year of dating, Amanda left to volunteer in Africa for three months.  With very little access to email, phone, or other forms of communication, this time apart was something that was going to make or break their relationship.  Amanda knew when Ryan never tried to convince her to stay and was fully supportive of her dreams, he was the one.  The week before her trip, Ryan road his bike on a century ride and raised over $6,000 to support the children Amanda was going to help.  After surviving this time apart, Amanda moved in with Ryan on her return.  They have lived together for 3 years – including a move from Orange County to New York City and then back to California where they both now reside in Los Angeles.  Upon their return to LA, they took a hike.  Ryan then asked Amanda to marry him.

The couple will be married in September in an intimate ceremony with family in Jackson, Wyoming in September 2010.

Cyber Love Story of the Week – Christina and Grant

Twitter love. Is it a new fad or here to stay?

Meet Christina and Grant. Read how they memorialized their love within 140 characters.

Christina, a technology and film journalist, met Grant in 2007. Grant was a part-time writer and full time software developer. They were working together as hosts and producers of a video podcast distributed by AOL titled “The Squadcast.”

“We had fantastic chemistry on camera, and it was honest — that same easy comfort between us existed off camera as well”, says Grant. That chemistry took a while to reach a boil, but in March of 2008 the pair began dating.

The couple was an instant hit. “I can’t imagine a more perfect mate.”, Grant explains, “I know it’s cliche but, Christina for me was like finding the missing piece to the jigsaw puzzle.” Christina adds, “Grant is my soulmate. I think I knew he was the one, deep down, long before we started dating.”

A little less than a year later, while Christina was away covering Macworld,  Grant popped the question via Twitter.

With both being early social-media adopters, news of the Twitter proposal spread like wildfire among the couple’s friends and colleagues. Christina recalls, “It was really nice to share my engagement with both my colleagues in San Francisco and with my friends and family all over the world — in real-time.”

Although “The Squadcast” ended production and Christina has since left AOL to join the juggernaut social media blog Mashable as a staff writer, the couple are still going strong. Christina and Grant plan to tie the knot in 2010.

Cyber Love Story of the Week – Tyler and Alan

It’s true what they say that people pay close attention to the relationship status feature on Facebook. Meet Tyler and Alan and find out how his crush came true in real life with a little help from Facebook.

Alan first discovered Tyler when she was being interviewed as an up-and-coming pop singer on television in Fall of 1989.  “I’m glad my first exposure to Tyler was her answering questions,” said Alan.  “Otherwise, I would have just emphasized her gorgeous looks and sex appeal.  Instead, because of the interview scenario, I was immediately smitten by how intelligent, articulate and down-to-earth she seemed.  She was my first true ‘celebrity crush’ from that point forward,” added Alan.

Later, in 1995, Alan worked in Beverly Hills, California with a friend named Robert whose girlfriend, Tamar, just happened to be best friends with Tyler.  Robert offered Alan the opportunity for a formal introduction, but Alan respectfully declined when Robert informed him that Tyler was already romantically involved with another gentlemen.

Fast forward to 2009.  Alan noticed Tyler on the friends list of an acquaintance on the popular social networking site, Facebook.  Alan sent Tyler a friend request, and Tyler accepted.  Once again though, Tyler was categorized as “in a relationship.”  To Alan’s pleasant surprise, her relationship status changed to “single” approximately two months later, and Alan did not waste any time expressing his interest and attraction for Tyler.  After exchanging phone numbers, the romantic chemistry between Alan and Tyler took off immediately.

After close to six months of constant phone conversations and endless emails, Alan and Tyler finally met face to face on December 29, 2009.   The two shared their now solidified love affair with all their Facebook friends and made it “official!”

Even though the new couple is maintaining a long-distance relationship for the time being (Alan resides in Northwest Indiana while Tyler lives in Southern California), the two plan on being together permanently before 2010 comes to an end!

Congratulations to Tyler and Alan, proof-positive that sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting decades for.

Cyber Love Story of the Week – Dana and Kyle

Meet Dana and Kyle.

Dana resided in Colorodo and joined the online dating site, ChristianCafe.com. She went on several dates with semi-decent guys, but none sparked her interest. One night, a chivalrous man from Kansas City started chatting with Dana. This man was Kyle and he drove 8 hours to meet Dana in Denver. Within 2 weeks, a whirlwind romance began.

Their first date was on New Year’s Eve. After spending quality time together, Kyle called Dana from the car ride back to Kansas City and told her he wanted to pursue her wholeheartedly. He proposed to Dana on Mt. Evans after a long hike. He wrote his proposal on his hiking sock in a permanent marker, which simply said, “Will U Marry Me?” The two plan on getting married in February, 2010 in St. Louis.

Cyber Love Story of the Week – Haleh and Itai

Haleh originally joined JDate because she wanted to try and meet a nice Jewish guy. While she was not a super-religious, she knew that Judaism was important to her. She knew that one day when she wanted to have children, she wanted to share the culture with a family. In 2006, Haleh was dating, but not meeting Jewish men. She thought if she signed up for the online dating site, JDate,  she might meet a Jewish guy.

Haleh had no idea that she would meet the man that she would spend her life with.

In early December 2008, Itai asked  Haleh to be his wife and  she said “YES!”  The two were married in October, 2009.

Cyber Love Story of the Week – Gail and Daniel

Gail joined the online dating site Match.com in July of 2005. She wan’t really looking for someone and had not been cyberdating for a while. Daniel contacted Gail, and at first glance she wasn’t interested in him. When she realized that they had some mutual friends in common, including the local minister, she decided to check into it further.

When she was told that Daniel was a great guy by her Minister, she agreed to meet him for coffee. That first date lasted for hours and so she says, the rest is history. They both knew after a few months of dating that they would get married someday. Everything just clicked for the two of them.

After 9 months of dating, Gail and Daniel got engaged. Two years after they  met, the were married in a small ceremony by the same Minister that gave Brad the vote of approval in the back yard of their new home. It was second marriage for both of them and they both truly believe they were lucky to find someone who shared their same values.
