Online dating doesn’t mean just signing up for a dating site when you’re single any more. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry filled with mobile apps, dating coaches, and helps both singles find love and couples stay together with ongoing dating tips.

In a pre-Valentine’s Love Goes Digital panel hosted by Kevin Winston of Digital LA, online dating experts and sites discussed dating advice, the growing trend of mobile dating, and how to keep your love alive after the knot has been tied.

Grant Langston, head of social media at eHarmony and an employee of the site since before it’s launch in 2000 shared his experience on the changes their site has gone through. In my personal opinion, I think they have one of the best iPad apps around. The site will shortly be rolling out a new feature for your eHarmony timeline that’s similar to a  Facebook time-line.

Justin Fredericks, founder of Marriage.com, a video network that curates, produces and promotes videos about wedding, marriage, dating, and relationships talked about the new social networking site Pinterest, as it focuses on women.

Jennifer Kelton from Bad Online Dates talked about her mobile strategy, Bad Date TV, and some niche online dating sites.

I shared with the audience how I created my first online dating profile in 1994 as a charter member of Love@Aol, during the days of the dial-up connection. I penned my stories in my first book, The Perils of Cyber-Dating: Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online and created CyberDatingExpert.com as a place for singles and couples to share their online dating stories. The use of social media on Twitter and Facebook has made a big impact on my brand. I also told singles not to ‘friend’ someone on Facebook before or after a first date. Personally, I think it’s creepy.

The audience was a mixed group of singles, married couples, dating industry executives, love coaches and those who are still looking for love online. We nibbled on chocolate, sipped One Coconut Water, and discussed what you should say or not say in your online dating profile.

At the end of the digital day, most of the audience felt they’d rather keep their love and dating life off of Facebook.

One thing’s for sure. The audience left fully armed with the dos and don’ts of social and online dating in time for Valentine’s Day.

How to make it stick: Every time you’re about to let loose with a “You always/You never [fill in the blank],” stop yourself and ask, is it worth the argument? Instead, sit down with your partner and make a list of things that you’ll agree to nudge each other about, like paying bills on time or getting the car inspected, and agree to let the rest go.

Find Happiness Outside Your Relationship.

Sure, you want to lean on your lover when times are tough, but when you’re too needy, it can be a turnoff. “We’re all more appealing when we have our own lives and are confident and feeling good about ourselves,” says Spira.

How to make it stick: Think of things that used to make you happy that you don’t do as much anymore, such as taking art lessons, practicing piano or even just seeing movies your partner doesn’t enjoy—and do them. Make dates with your girlfriends, join the softball team at work, whatever. “Live your life as though it’s not wrapped around his,” suggests Spira. Having interests and experiences that have nothing to do with each other means you have more to bring to the relationship

Other resolutions include increase gratitude for your partner;  be a better listener, show more interest in your partner’s life work and interests;  and institute a date night.

My friends over at social dating community Zoosk surveyed their members this month to learn more about the relationship between money and dating during the present economic climate. The good news for men is, if you’re unemployed, more women will want to date you than a year ago.

According to the study, 60% of women said they’d date someone unemployed. Compared to 52% in 2009, women are now adjusting their expectations in the available dating pool.

The study also revealed that 90% of men said they’d date someone unemployed. Is it still only about looks for men?

So how are these online daters spending their money? The Zoosk study says that 90% of men say they usually pick up the tab on a date. It also appears men are spending more money on the average date than they did a year ago.The women on the other hand, are spending less than they did a year ago.

More singles are taking advantage of free activities than a year ago.

Should you tell your date you are unemployed? According to Zooskers, the answer is yes. 83% of men and 93% of women agree that if you’re out of work, you should reveal it right away.

Gustavo Dudamel - Photo Credit: LA Phil

It was an evening to remember at the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall where we were treated to an evening of Schubert, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.

The performance started with Luciano Berio (Italy) and Franz Schubert (Austria), and was followed by Berio with soprano Dawn Upshaw on vocals. During the intermission, I stopped by the Founders Room for an exciting champagne toast to Dudamel. After the intermission, one of Schubert’s most famous pieces, Symphony No. 8 in B minor D 750. “Unfinished” was performed by the LA Philharmonic led by our new conductor.

At the end of the unfinished piece, the normally sophisticated crowd applauded and yelled, “Dudamel, Dudamel” as if we were at a rock concert. Patrons were able to meet Dawn Upshaw at the LA Phil Store following the performance where she was signing copies of her CD’s.

Across the street from the Disney, a huge tent was erected with guests from all over the country celebrating MOCA’s 30th birthday. It was truly a cultural evening in the city of Los Angeles.
