The Carrie Diaries

Cyber-Dating Expert Reading Room

I was happy to see that Candace Bushnell released a book just a month before the Sex and the City 2 film. In The Carrie Diaries, Bushnell shares with us what life was like for Carrie Bradshaw during her senior year of high school.

You’ll read about the about Carrie’s first glimpse in becoming a writer, see how her friendships developed, and get a glimpse about her life pre-SATC.

Although the book is targeted to young adults, fans of Sex and the City of all ages will enjoy hearing about the earlier years in the life of Carrie Bradshaw. It’s a great summer read and I’m please to add it to the Cyber-Dating Expert Reading Room.

Act Like a Lady – Think Like a Man

August 25, 2009

It’s the number one relationship book online and in the bookstores. He’s been on Oprah. He’s just been named a special correspondent on parenting and relationships for Good Morning America. It’s been out since the beginning of the year, and it just made it into the Cyber-Dating Expert Reading Room.

You may be wondering, what took it so long? When ABC announced last week that Harvey would be joining the team, I finally went out and purchased his best-selling book.

You may have already read the book. But if you have not, I recommend Steve Harvey’s book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment for all the women who really want to know how men think.

It’s a simple book with a basic no brainer approach to understanding the male species. Harvey has his 90-day probationary rule and advises women not to “put out” before that time. He says you are worth the wait. He calls it the “cookie.”

The book helps women get into the mind-set of a man by listing three important facts on how a man looks at himself.

  • Who he is
  • What he does
  • How much money he makes

Harvey also adds three things that every man needs in a relationship from a woman.

  • Support
  • Loyalty
  • The “Cookie”

I call the “cookie” dessert. From a male’s standpoint, it’s the reward for his hard-working dollars. If a woman isn’t providing sex to her man, Harvey claims he WILL go elsewhere. It’s a simple tough-love formula and a terrific book.

Love Child

April 7, 2009

It was a privilege and honor to meet the lovely Allegra Huston, sister of Anjelica and daughter of the legendary director, John Huston, at her book signing and appearance at The Council of the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.

Her new book, Love Child: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found, is an emotional story of her life starting as a child at the age of four, with the tragic car accident death of her mother. Shortly there after, she was introduced to a man and was told, ‘This is your father.”  The man was legendary film director, John Huston. At the age of twelve, she was then shocked as she was introduced to her biological father, the British aristocrat  John Julius Norwich.

She spoke about her family dynamics, including attending the funeral of her legal father, John Huston along with her sister Anjelica and Jack Nicholson.  As she read excerpts from her book, we listened and all felt her warmth and sorrow as she shared her emotional stories with the group.

Allegra Huston shows great strength as she shares the details from her painful memoir, including finding out that she was a “Love Child” which resulted from an affair her mother had, to the sadness of having no memory of ever being in her mother’s arms, to having two high-profile fathers. She shares her love and acceptance of her large extended family.

I applaud Ms. Huston for her courage to share her stories with the world. She is now happy and living in New Mexico with her son Rafael, and his father.

Green Wedding: Planning your Eco-Friendly Celebration

January 5, 2009

Mireya Navarro, an environmental writer for the  New York Times, has just written a wedding book for today’s eco-friendly world called Green Wedding: Planning Your Eco-Friendly Celebration.

The book features stories from couples who have “greened up” their dream weddings, along with beautiful photos and ideas for an eco-friendly wedding celebration. If your guests are interested in global-warming, and they should be, they will appreciate the efforts made by the environmentally responsible bride and groom.

Green principles will give you a much needed reality check as you grapple with the emotions and stresses of wedding planning. If you risk drowning in the wedding 100-item to-do checklist, a green wedding throws you a no-waste life ring.  It gives you an armor to fend off unwanted pressures from relatives, friends, or vendors trying to covince you to spend lavishly on fancy tablecloths or flower arrangements. It adds clarity, sorts out priorities and choices. “That’s not  green!” you can resond to a pushy helper and move on.

In addition, Green Wedding: Planning Your Eco-Friendly Celebration will make a great gift for a couple who just got engaged.
