At that time Mary was going through a divorce and was looking for a “pen pal.” Their friendship began over email as Mary lived in Connecticut and Rick was living in New Hampshire. They communicated on a webcam and finally met a month later in August, 1998.
Their friendship quickly blossomed into love. They attended the opera in New York City a few months later, and Mary knew she was falling in love with Rick. Rick proposed on New Year’s Eve heading into 2000 and the couple were married in May of that year, on what would have been Rick’s parents 50th anniversary.
