Match Says Goodbye to Screen Names. How to Change Your User Name

Match user namesIn a time where online dating continues to grow in popularity, the need for authenticity and honesty is something that daters continue to dream of.

To help you with your search, Match.com will be saying goodbye to your old screen name and you can now officially use your first name on your profile. As we can see from mobile dating apps such as Tinder and other sites, singels actually like to see your real name on a profile.

In thinking back to my first user names, I wanted to have a bit of anonymity and used “Pianobaby” as I played a baby grand piano and “HarleyQT” as I loved riding on the back of bikes. I felt they were a good representation of my personality with the hopes of finding someone else who was passionate about music and motorcycles.

Starting today, you can change your screen name to your first name. According to the Match blog, If you’re first name is Sarah, Michelle or Lisa, chances are you’ll get more emails from men. For the guys, if your first name is Mike, Steve, or Dan, you’ll have a greater chance of receiving an email from the ladies.

How to Change Your User Name on Match

If you’re ready to retire your screen name now, log on to your Match account and go to Account Settings to change your Match username to your actual name. You can also also change it using the Match app on your iPhone.

To celebrate this right of passage, Match would like to hear your horrible usernames– because let’s face it, everyone has had one. Tweet @Match using #RIPMatchUsername and they’ll pick their favorites to win a free 6-month membership.

Are you ready to change your screen name?

How to Improve Your Online Dating Profile

Cyber Dating Expert Profile CritiqueSo you've got a few profiles up on various online dating sites, but you're noticing that your inbox is on the empty side. What's a single dater to do? We know that most people weren't born to be copyrighters and writing about yourself is often uncomfortable. You just can't express that witty and unique personality while typing on your mobile phone or computer and are pulling your hair out, while your date card isn't filling up. If you feel this way, you're not alone.

When a lovely attractive single woman reached out to me on Twitter needing help with her profile, it didn't take long to see why she wasn't meeting quality men online. She was smart and adorable, but the men couldn't notice that while swiping and scrolling the site. Here are the ways we've improved her profile.

Read: How to Create the Best Online Dating Profile

1. Word Count – While this dating profile was fun and flirty, it was way too long. I always say, "leave the novel at home." With 5 paragraphs and 423 words in the About Me, section, it was more than her potential dates would ever read. Plus, it's always good to leave your date wanting more.

Suggestion: Reduce the word count to 125-150 words.

2. Post 3-5 photos. This profile had an adorable primary photo shot wearing hot pink. It was close to perfect, except there were no additional photos. Daters’ are accustomed to scrolling through a series of photos to get a digital snapshot of who they might be interested in. While this dater had a very active lifestyle, was in great shape and loved to run, there were no full-length body shots or activity shots included on the profile. Men jump to the default position of thinking that a woman without a full-length body shot is out-of-shape.

Suggestion: Add 2 more photos. One while running a triathalon and the other with a full length shot to show off her figure.

3. Ditch the negative comments. Profiles should be upbeat and positive. Think as if you're having a perfect hair day, only it's a perfect profile day. When you're advertising about your flaws, your potential date will believe that you are indeed flawed and will look elsewhere. In this profile, it read as follows:

I’m always singing in the car, but I don’t know any of the words to the songs I always listen to.

I once waited in line with a bunch of four year olds just to get a picture of Winnie the Pooh because he’s my favorite – and felt awkward the entire time.

I am actually capable of being serious when needed. But only if I really have to.

Descriptions such as these needed to go. After all, how can you be singing in a car, but not know any words? Why would anyone want to date someone who might be awkward?

Suggestion: Keep it to positive and alluring descriptions. After all, don't you want to be the girl he or she just has to meet?

4. Express YOUR voice. Dating profile should be all about you! Potential dates don't want to hear how your friends or family members describe you. They aren't interested going out on a date yet with your extended family or girlfriend network.

Suggestion: Dump the cliche and let your dates know about you from the first-person. Think about how you might describe yourself on a phone call with a date and make it fun and conversational.

At the end of the digital day, your profile should be a unique snapshot with the goal of starting a conversation online and moving your relationship offline IRL.

Wishing you much love and joy in cyberspace, or wherever you may roam. xo

The Olympics, Sports, and Your Love Life

POF Olympics

When you’re single and are on an online dating site, you spend hours-and-hours often answering questions to find a compatible match.

When it comes to physical activities, most men I know who are huge skiers, won’t date a woman who won’t play in the snow with them.

In conjunction with the Sochi Olympics, PlentyOfFish looked at 50,000 of their single members to find out which sports fans will get lucky in love and which activities were the best turn-on?s.

The survey showed that nearly 1 in 2 single men are watching the Olympics because the athletes are sexy, and roughly 1 in 3 single women admit to watching a sport purely for the sex appeal.

POF found that snowboarding and ice hockey were considered the sexiest Winter Olympic Sports by the single women, while the majority of men preferred figure skating.

It was no surprise that the top ranked most handsome male athlete was Olympic snowboarder Bode Miller.

The Top 5 Sexiest athletes at Sochi from the singles survey include:

  1. Bode Miller (Skiing) 22.4%
  2. Henrik Lundqvist (Hockey) 15.6%
  3. Charlie White (Figure Skating) 6.1%
  4. Bobby Brown (Skiing) 3.4%
  5. Shani Davis (Speed Skating) 1.4%

Top 5 Sexiest Female Athletes Competing at Sochi:

  1. Lolo Jones (Bobsleigh) 14.9%
  2. Linn Haug (Snowboarding) 14.2%
  3. Anna Fenninger (Skiing) 11.2%
  4. Anna Sidorova (Curling) 10.8%
  5. Tina Maze (Alpine Skiing) 8.6%

Other findings include:

  • Snowboarding and Ice Hockey are considered the sexiest Winter Olympic sport by single women, each earning 27.3% of the votes
  • An overwhelming 43.6% of single men consider Figure Skating to be the sexiest Winter Olympic sport
  • Men and women agree that curling is the least attractive Winter Olympic sport ? (41.7% of women and 28.3% of men)
  • 49.1% of singles consider Beach Volleyball the sexiest Summer Olympic sport
  • 51.9% of singles consider Weight Lifting to be the least attractive Summer Olympic sport

So how does this relate to your dating life?

PlentyOfFish found the following statistics:

  • Singles who share a love of Hockey are 440% more likely to form a relationship
  • Singles who share a love of Skiing are 380% more likely to form a relationship
  • Singles who share a love of Swimming are 280% times more likely to form a relationship
  • Singles who share a love of Biking are 280% times more likely to form a relationship.

So what’s the answer? Start spending more time outdoors if you want to find a relationship. Go to sports bars and watch hockey games, take a ski lesson, and wipe the dust off the bicycle that’s sitting in your garage.

Do you enjoy outdoor activities with a date?

Your comments are welcome.

To Post, or Not to Post ‘Selfies’ on Your Online Dating Profile

Selfies - CyberDatingExpert.comWith celebrities such as Rhianna posting ‘Selfie’ photos, should you jump in on the ‘Selfies’ bandwagon on your Internet dating profile?

Let’s start with what is a ‘Selfie?’ It’s one of the most popular hashtags on Twitter when someone snaps their own photo with their mobile phone. Usually it’s goofy, a bathroom shot in the mirror, or in the case of Rhianna, a bikini shot or two.

I love technology and there’s no doubt that the iPhone has made cyberdating a whole lot easier and so much more fun.

As the cameras continue to improve on the Samsung Galaxy, iPhones, and other mobile devices, while Instagram remains the favorite social networking photo site du jour, the prevalence of ‘Selfie’ photos are appearing more often on Internet dating profiles.

So who’s posting ‘Selfies’ and are they narcissistic, funny, expected, or a turn-off? Just because celebrities are jumping on the ‘Selfie’ bandwagon, should you?

In a recent Glamour magazine article, a list of 11 turn-offs to men who viewed women?s online dating profiles listed ‘Selfies’ twice.

Just makes me wonder how long you spent in your room taking shots that didn’t make the cut,? one guy claimed.

In addition, the bathroom ‘Selfie’ is an online dating no-no.

Unless it’s done ironically, in which case, are you free on Thursday? was another response.

Taking it a step further, research from the University of Birmingham in the UK found that too many ‘Selfies’ posted on Facebook could actually damage your relationship.

David Houghton, the lead researcher said, “Selfies, or self-portraits, seem to be some of the most irksome images.”

In a recent interview with the New York Daily News, I provided several tips for those who have no self-control when posting ‘Selfies’ including:

Ladies: No Bikini Photos. Just because Rhianna does it, doesn’t mean your potential online date will appreciate yours. A bikini shot is just lingerie with different material. A man will undress you with his eyes. There’s no need to say take me to the bedroom with your bikini ‘Selfie.’

Guys: Ditch the Mirror Photos. Posting a photo of yourself without wearing a shirt in the bathroom mirror has become as cliche as the woman who says she wants to go on beach walks in her Internet dating profile.

While authenticity is appreciated in posting recent photos, we know that the selfies shots aren’t usually your best. I say save them for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Put your best digital foot forward and post the best photos you can of yourself. Add the dates they were taken, so your online date will know how recent they are.

Are you posting ‘Selfies’ on your dating profile? What has the response been?

Looking for Love Online – The Business of Online Dating [Infographic]

MBA Programs - Looking for Love Online [infographic]

Looking for Love Online? You’re not alone as the online dating industry has more than doubled in revenue in the past five years.

Internet dating has been the featured topic of many Infographics that we’ve added to our pinboard on Pinterest.

The latest one comes from MBA Programs, which includes the sub-title of our book, Confessions of a Hopeful Romantic Looking for Love Online, so we couldn’t resist sharing it with you.

As they ponder if online dating really works and tell us who lies the most, we wonder why men would only knock off two pounds and 1/2 an inch off their true weight and height.? Do you think online daters rush to the alter three times faster than those who have met offline?

We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Enjoy!
