3 Tips for a Great Dating Profile for Singles Over 50
Dating apps continue to be the most popular way for singles to meet, especially those 40+, 50+, and 60+. And thanks to shows like The Golden Bachelor, more people in midlife and beyond are embracing modern dating with a fresh sense of confidence and possibility.

Here’s the portion of my TODAY Show conversation with Maria Shriver where I shared my top dating profile do’s and don’ts:
Tip 1: A Photo Is Worth 1,000 Words
Your pictures tell your story long before someone reads your bio. Your dating app photos need to feel current, intriguing, and authentically you.
What Not to Do (Bad Profile Example)
On the TODAY Show, I shared several common mistakes I see all the time:
- Group shots (“Who’s who?”)
- Dark sunglasses hiding your eyes
- Selfies that don’t show you at your best
- Old, filtered, or heavily edited pictures
These choices confuse potential matches or send mixed signals.
What To Do Instead (Good Profile Example)
Choose photos that reflect your real life and interests:
- Use a clear, warm, close-up photo showing your eyes
- Feature smiling shots that feel approachable
- Post photos of activities you genuinely enjoy — music, golf, pickleball, hiking, travel, or time with your dog
- Add lifestyle photos that help someone imagine spending time with you

Ditch the Bikini Photos if You’re Looking for a Serious Relationship
A bikini pic can send the wrong message if you’re looking for something lasting. On dating apps, it’s often viewed like lingerie, and paired with dark sunglasses or a sultry expression, it can imply “hookup energy,” which isn’t what most singles over 50 want.
Keeping your photos polished, confident, and classy sets the right tone from the start.
Post Photos of Activities You Love
Lifestyle photos make a big difference. When you share pictures of the things you genuinely enjoy, and remember to caption them with the year and locale, it helps someone imagine what time with you might look like.
For example, music is a big part of my life, so I might caption a guitar photo by inviting someone to request that I play a song on the piano. A golf photo suggests a fun date at the driving range or taking a lesson together.
Tip #2: Focus on the Positive
On the TODAY Show, I compared a “bad” profile filled with complaints and unrealistic demands — the type of profile that sends people running.
Instead of:
- “Don’t contact me if…”
- “No drama, no games, no issues…”
- Height requirements (“Must be 6’+”)
Shift toward qualities that truly matter to you:
- Great conversation
- Kindness
- Humor
- Curiosity
- Shared interests
- A desire for connection
A warm, grounded profile feels more inviting and encourages better, more aligned matches.
Tip #3 Keep Your Wish List Short and Sweet
When Maria Shriver and I compared profiles, she kept her list simple: someone kind, fun, and smart. We paired it with a photo showing her beautiful, award-winning smile. And the result? She immediately felt approachable.
A short, sincere list inspires more messages, better matches, and the easiest way to fill your date card.
