It was an honor to spend the evening with Lois and Buzz Aldrin as Buzz was celebrating his 40th anniversary of the historical Apollo 11 mission. Colonel Aldrin was the first of two men to land on the moon on July 20, 1969.
Aldrin was hosted by the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and was on stage with Dr. Howard Mccurdy, the author of Faster, Better, Cheaper.
The evening started with a VIP cocktail reception and was followed by dinner at the Hyatt Regency in Century City. We were treated to the hilarious music video where Buzz learned how to rap by Snoop Dog to the tune of Rocket Experience. When asked what one needs to do to become an astronaut by an 18 year old admirer, his response was “If you want to land on the moon, maybe you should learn Chinese.”
Buzz signed copies of his best-selling book,?Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home from the Moon?and told the crowd about his plans to have people walk on Mars in the year 2031, when the legendary astronaut will be 101 years old.
Buzz will be continuing his whirlwind book to Europe before returning to California. We chatted about how we were both from New Jersey. Aldrin is from Montclair, and he told the audience that when he left that lovely town, he was replaced by Yogi Berra.
Both Buzz and Lois are supporters of the World Affairs Council. It was truly a special evening.
