AI Boyfriends and AI Girlfriends: Trend or Trap?

AI Boyfriends and Girlfriends

Dating in an AI World and the Rise of AI Companions

Valentine’s Day used to be about candlelight dinners and handwritten notes. Today, some single daters are asking a very different question:

If I’m single, should I date an AI boyfriend or an AI girlfriend?

It may feel futuristic, but it’s no longer fringe behavior. Artificial companionship is quickly moving into the mainstream.

According to the 2026 Norton Artificial Intimacy Report, 77% of U.S. online daters say they would consider dating an AI chatbot. Even more striking, 59% believe it’s possible to fall in love with one.

Watch: My recent TV interview on the rise of AI boyfriends and AI girlfriends.

In my recent interview about AI boyfriends and AI girlfriends, I discussed why artificial intimacy is gaining traction and what singles should consider before exploring AI companionship.

Why AI Companions Are Growing

Technology has shaped dating for decades. From early chat rooms to online dating sites to dating app swipe culture, innovation has always influenced how we meet and connect.

But AI is accelerating that evolution in ways I’ve never seen before.

The reason singles are flocking to AI companions:

  • They’re always available
  • They respond instantly
  • They’re emotionally validating
  • It’s conflict-free

In a digital world where 81% of people report feeling lonely, according to Norton, it’s not surprising that many are drawn to something that feels attentive and affirming.

AI doesn’t leave you on read.
It doesn’t ghost you.
It doesn’t require vulnerability.

And that’s exactly where the distinction rests.

Efficiency Isn’t Intimacy

AI can improve efficiency.

As I’ve written in my article on Dating in an AI World: What Technology Can — and Can’t — Do for Love, technology can introduce us — but it cannot build intimacy for us.

It can help you write a dating profile.
It can help you respond to a message.
It can reduce anxiety around what to say next.

But efficiency isn’t intimacy.

That’s why, in a world where AI can simulate conversation but not emotional reciprocity, my Digital Matchmaker® methodology focuses on building real chemistry, vulnerability, and intentional connection.

Intimacy requires emotional reciprocity. It requires risk, nuance, misunderstanding, repair, and growth. AI can simulate empathy, but it does not experience it.

Artificial intimacy may feel safe — but real intimacy requires presence.

The Appeal — and the Risk

Some singles turn to AI companionship after heartbreak. Norton reports that 70% would use AI for emotional support after a breakup, and 78% would trust AI over friends or family for relationship advice.

That signals a deeper shift.

When AI becomes the primary source of emotional validation, we risk replacing human connection with predictable interaction. And predictable interaction doesn’t stretch us. It doesn’t challenge us. It doesn’t help us grow.

We are also seeing increased risks in the digital space. Social engineering scams now account for over 90% of digital threats, and 44% of online daters report being targeted by scams. As AI becomes more sophisticated, emotional manipulation becomes easier to scale.

That’s why understanding Dating Safely in an AI World is more important than ever.

Artificial intimacy may blur discernment.

And discernment still matters.

Are AI Boyfriends and AI Girlfriends Replacing Real Relationships?

AI boyfriends and girlfriends are absolutely a growing trend.

But trends are not always the same as transformation.

If someone uses AI as a supplemental tool — a digital assistant, a writing aid, a way to build confidence — that’s one thing.

If someone replaces human relationships entirely with artificial companionship, that’s something else.

AI is here to stay. The question isn’t whether it will be part of the dating landscape.

The real question is how we use it.

My Advice for Singles Dating in an AI World

Use AI as a tool in your digital toolkit. Not as a substitute for connection.

I outline this further in my 10 Digital Matchmaker Rules for Dating in an AI World.

Let AI and tools like ChatGPT help you structure your thoughts.
Let it boost clarity.
Let it reduce hesitation.

But don’t outsource vulnerability.
Don’t outsource chemistry.
And don’t confuse responsiveness with emotional reciprocity.

Real love still requires:

  • Mutual experiences
  • Emotional presence
  • Conflict resolution
  • Physical chemistry
  • Growth through discomfort

No algorithm can replicate that.

Final Thought

Artificial intimacy may feel comforting.

But love has never been about perfection.
It has always been about presence.

As we navigate dating in an AI world, remember:

Efficiency isn’t intimacy.
Artificial isn’t reciprocal.
And discernment still matters.
