Online dating is once again entering a new chapter.
For more than a decade, swiping defined digital romance. One quick motion became the universal act of modern dating: swipe left for no, swipe right for yes.
Now, Bumble says it plans to move beyond swiping, signaling a major change in how singles connect online. In a recent Axios interview, Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd said the company is “saying goodbye to the swipe” as users experience growing fatigue with endless scrolling and superficial matching.
But while much of the conversation around Bumble’s decision has focused on technology, the bigger story may be what it reveals about singles’ behavior on dating apps.
As an online dating expert who has coached singles through every stage of digital dating, from the earliest online dating sites to today’s app culture, I believe this shift reflects something much deeper.
Singles are no longer chasing endless matches. Singles are seeking meaningful connections and approaching dating more intentionally.
Why Singles Are Looking Beyond Endless Swiping
When Tinder introduced the swipe, it transformed online dating by making introductions faster and easier.
Over time, dating apps became a numbers game. Endless scrolling, swiping, low-effort conversations, ghosting, and repetitive experiences left many singels
What was once exciting has now become impersonal for many singles.
Whitney Wolfe Herd told Axios that many users feel “the swipe has degraded their love lives.” That statement spoke to many singles because it reflects what I hear regularly in my dating coaching sessions.
Today’s singles still want companionship and lasting relationships, but many are prioritizing:
- Meaningful conversations
- Emotional availability
- Shared values
- Consistency
- Authenticity
- Genuine compatibility
I believe that’s a healthy evolution.
How AI Is Changing the Dating Experince
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of the online dating experience.
Several dating apps, including Bumble, are testing and utilizing AI-powered tools to improve matching, profile suggestions, and communications prompts.
These tools can help users present themselves more clearly online, especially for singles who struggle with writing profiles or starting conversations.
But technology should support connection, not replace it.
As someone who has been coaching singles through the evolution of online dating for decades, I believe emotional intelligence and authentic communication will always matter more than algorithms alone.
Technology may introduce people, but a relationship still develops between two humans.
What This Shift Means for Singles
The message isn’t that people should stop using dating apps. Instead, it signals a shift in how singles are approaching them.
More singles are becoming intentional about:
- Who they match with
- How much time they spend swiping
- What type of relationship they want
- How quickly they move conversations offline
Dating apps aren’t disappearing, but the behavior around them is changing.
The future of online dating will likely focus less on accumulating matches and more on building compatible relationships with emotional clarity and stronger communication.
Earlier this year, I wrote about the importance of recognizing relationship green flags as singles navigate modern dating more intentionally.
Emotional consistency, honesty, and aligned communication and values matter more than ever.
How Singles Can Move Beyond the Swipe
As dating apps continue to evolve, here are five ways singles can create more meaningful experiences online:
1. Focus on quality over quantity
More matches don’t automatically lead to better dating experiences. Meaningful conversations matter more than days and nights of constant swiping.
2. Use AI as a tool — not a substitute
Technology can help you brainstorm ideas or improve your profile, but your personality and voice should still shine through.
3. Update your profile regularly
Your photos and bio should reflect who you are today and the type of relationship you’re looking for now.

4. Move offline sooner
The goal of online dating isn’t endless texting. It’s meeting your match in person to see if real chemistry and compatibility exist.
5. Prioritize emotional clarity
The strongest relationships are built through communication, trust, consistency, and emotional availability.
Remember: The Future of Dating Is Still Human
Technology will continue to shape how people meet.
Dating apps and AI will keep evolving, but cannot replace authentic human connections.
That part of dating hasn’t changed.
