Receiving the WOW Award

Big Dreams Luncheon

I am most known for writing about matters of the heart and relationships. Today I want to share with you a very special subject for me, matters of the heart and soul and the impact of mentoring.

On October 7, 2010, ?I received the prestigious WOW Award (Wonderful Outstanding Woman), at the Beverly Hills Hotel by JBBBS. It was an honor and a very touching day for me and my family, along with over 200 guests in attendance.

You may be wondering, why did I receive such an honor? I did not apply for this award. There was no contest or raffle. ?I was simply told one day that I was being honored by Jewish Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Los Angeles at their 4th annual Big Dreams Luncheon for the work I have done as a member of the Board of Trustees and as a Big Sister and mentor.

JBBBS-LA has been around for almost 100 years. They serve over 3000 children in the Los Angeles community. As many of you were not in attendance to hear the story of my match as a Big Sister from JBBBS CEO Margy Feldman and the beautiful introduction by my friend and fellow board member Leslie Kavanaugh, I thought I would share with you my acceptance speech and encourage you to give back to your community, for you will receive so much more than you give.

“It’s such an honor to be the recipient of this year’s WOW Award. I feel so humbled to be following in the footsteps of such extraordinary women who have received this award in the past few years.”

“I am very fortunate to come from a family who has always given back to the community. Giving is something we must pass on from generation to generation. It’s what makes our society work. It’s what makes our community work. It’s what makes our country work. It’s what defines us as individuals.”

“Five years ago, I woke up to an empty house, an empty nest and an empty heart. I knew I needed to find a new place to call home, and that my desire to mentor was an absolute necessity for me.”

“Where many of us use the Internet to find a date, a mate, a new pair of shoes or an airline ticket, I used the Internet to connect with Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters, which resulted in my match with my Little Sister, both of which became my new extended family.”

“The Mark of success is not what your financial statement looks like. The mark of success is how you give back to your community. What we do here at JBBBS is about heart and soul. It’s about serving 3000 children every year and making a difference in their lives and changing their paths to a positive direction.”

“No matter how much all of us give to this and other organizations, what we receive in return is priceless.”

“Thank you for making me part of the JBBBS family and for allowing Jewish Big Brothers, Big Sisters to enrich my life in so very many ways.”

“To my wonderful parents, I thank you for being such incredible role models. You have no idea how much I admire you both for your dedication and unconditional love. Thank you to all of my friends and to the Big Dreams Committee members for your overwhelming support.”

“I thank you from the very bottom of my heart, which is no longer empty. It’s now filled with joy every single day.”
